Sleep apnea, or nocturnal apnea, is the suspension of breathing during sleep. These episodes of apnea (from the Greek word àpnoia, meaning lack of breath) can last a few seconds, after which normal breathing resumes, and they occur several times during sleep.

Most of the time, they are not enough to wake the person up, but there is a change in the sleep pattern, moving from deep sleep to a more shallow sleep.

The manifestations of the disease include snoring (with breathing pauses, called apneas) and, since the sleep is not restful, typical symptoms are a feeling of having had a "bad night" upon waking up, as well as fatigue and sleepiness during the day.
